‘Come on Angel, don’t you ever want to fly?’

It’s 1948 and Cork city’s crying. Rations. Unemployment. Grief. And those heavy, unforgiving clouds. But somewhere on the edge of the harbour, two young girls are plotting a new planet. Armed with matching kites, Kitty and Angel set sail for the skies, sharing hopes, dreams and sugar sandwiches. Through dress-up and play, they leave behind their broken families and war time grief, and let their fantasies find wings…..But like the town herself, the girls are growing. What happens when the line gets caught, and reality beckons?

KITES is a fast-paced, sensory spectacle about the rite of passage from girlhood to womanhood in post-war Ireland. It is an intimate and empowering coming of age play, exploring gender roles, fantasy, sexuality, friendship, love and rage.
